In this post, I’ll walk through some of the most popular Catholic pilgrimage sites in Spain — places that draw millions of visitors every year and offer moments of peace, reflection, and deep spiritual renewal.

Some of these sites we’ve already been blessed to visit as a family, and others are still on our “someday soon” pilgrimage list. We’re hoping to keep checking them off in the years ahead — God willing!

1. Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Galicia

Santiago de Compostela Cathedral is one of the most beloved Catholic pilgrimage sites in Spain — and possibly the most well-known. Located in Galicia, this is the final destination of the famous Camino de Santiago.

The cathedral is believed to hold the tomb of St. James the Great, one of the apostles of Jesus. Pilgrims from around the world walk for weeks (or even months!) to reach this holy site, entering the city with joy, gratitude, and often tears.

2. Avila Cathedral in Avila

The Cathedral of Avila, also known as the Cathedral of the Saviour, is a striking Romanesque-Gothic church built right into the old city walls of Avila. Dating back to the 12th century, it’s one of the most unique and spiritually rich cathedrals in Spain.

Inside, you’ll find beautiful stained-glass windows, detailed stone carvings, and a stunning main altar that invites quiet prayer and reflection. It’s a wonderful stop for pilgrims, especially those interested in the life of St. Teresa of Avila, who lived nearby.

3. Valencia Cathedral in Valencia

The Valencia Cathedral, officially known as the Metropolitan Cathedral–Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, is a beautiful 13th-century church located in the heart of Valencia. It blends Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque styles — and is filled with sacred history.

It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and home to the Holy Chalice which is believed to be the Holy Grail that Jesus used during the Last Supper with His disciples.

It’s also a great spot to explore with kids — filled with artwork, peaceful side chapels, and plenty of room to walk and wonder.

4. Sanctuary of the Apparitions in Pontevedra

The Sanctuary of the Apparitions in Pontevedra, Galicia, is closely connected to the story of Our Lady of Fátima. This is where Sister Lúcia, one of the children who saw the Fátima apparitions in Portugal, experienced further visions of the Child Jesus and the Virgin Mary in 1925 and 1926.

These apparitions are significant because they introduced the devotion of the Five First Saturdays, encouraging Catholics to pray, go to confession, and receive the Eucharist on the first Saturday of five consecutive months.

The sanctuary features a small chapel for prayer, a museum sharing the story of the apparitions, and a convent where Sister Lúcia lived during this time.

Many pilgrims visit to pray, learn more about the Fátima message, and reflect on their faith in this peaceful and spiritual setting.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos, commonly known as Burgos Cathedral, is one of Spain’s most magnificent examples of Gothic architecture and a powerful place of prayer and reflection. Built in the 12th century, it features detailed stone carvings, colorful stained glass, and a breathtaking main altar.

6. Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana in Cantabria

The Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana is tucked in the Cantabrian mountains, surrounded by the beautiful Picos de Europa. It’s one of Spain’s most sacred pilgrimage sites and a peaceful spot for reflection.

This monastery is home to the Lignum Crucis, believed to be the largest remaining piece of the True Cross of Jesus. For centuries, pilgrims have come here seeking grace, healing, and a deeper connection with Christ.

The monastery dates back to the 6th century and is full of history, beauty, and silence — all wrapped in nature. It’s a wonderful place to take a break from busyness and enter into quiet prayer.

7. Oviedo Cathedral in Asturias

The Cathedral of Oviedo (also known as Cathedral of San Salvador) in Asturias, Spain is a pilgrimage site for Catholics all over Spain, it is home to one of Catholicism’s most treasured relics – The Holy Shroud Of Oviedo, also known as Sudarium Of Oviedo.

This sacred cloth has been acknowledged by numerous religious authorities and pilgrims alike as the cloth used to cover the head of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion.

The cathedral is also one of the main stopovers for pilgrims who are doing the famous Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James). There’s a saying that goes:

“Who goes to Santiago but not to Salvador, visits the servant but not the Lord.”

If you are planning on doing the Camino de Santiago in the near or distant future, you should be aware that skipping the Cathedral of Oviedo is not advisable.

8. Seville Cathedral in Seville

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, more commonly known as the Seville Cathedral, is one of the most iconic Catholic churches in Spain. Built in the 16th century, this enormous Gothic cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest in the world.

9. Torreciudad Sanctuary in Huesca

The Sanctuary of Torreciudad is a modern Marian shrine in the Spanish region of Aragón. It was founded by Saint Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei, and is often called the Shrine for Families.

This is one of those special places we try to visit every time we’re driving from Spain to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France.

If you’re visiting with your children, definitely ask a priest or staff member about making a child dedication — we didn’t know about this beautiful tradition on our first visit, but a kind priest came over and explained it to us.

10. Basilica-Shrine of La Vera Cruz in Murcia

he Basilica‑Shrine of La Vera Cruz in Caravaca de la Cruz is one of Spain’s most sacred sites. It houses a double‑armed cross, believed to hold a fragment of the True Cross of Christ, and has drawn pilgrims for centuries seeking spiritual strength.

In 1998, Pope John Paul II declared Caravaca a Holy City of Catholicism, making it only one of a few places in the world with that honor.
Walking the Camino de Caravaca is an experience filled with charming villages, peaceful countryside, and the joy of pilgrims on their journey.

Every May, the city comes alive for the Fiesta de la Vera Cruz, with processions, celebrations, and sacred traditions. If you’re looking for a meaningful pilgrimage that offers beauty, devotion, and fewer crowds than Santiago, this shrine is a wonderful choice.

11. Sagrada Familia Basilica in Barcelona

The Sagrada Familia Basilica in Barcelona is one of the most iconic Catholic sites in Spain — and in all of Europe. Designed by Antoni Gaudí, it’s a masterpiece of modernist architecture, full of symbolism, color, and spiritual beauty.

Though it’s still under construction (expected to be completed by 2026), the basilica already draws millions of visitors every year. It’s a powerful reminder of the Catholic faith, rising right out of the heart of the city.

12. Segovia Cathedral in Segovia

The Cathedral of Segovia is a breathtaking Gothic church built in the 16th century, right in the heart of Segovia’s old town. It’s known for its stunning altar, stained-glass windows, and detailed stone carvings — a true example of Spanish Catholic beauty.

The cathedral draws both pilgrims and tourists, and it’s definitely a must-see if you’re ever visiting Madrid or central Spain.

I was able to visit the cathedral back in 2009 or 2010 when I was working as a househelp. My employers brought me along on a vacation to Madrid, and we took a side trip to Segovia. I still remember how beautiful it was — sadly, I lost all my photos when my laptop broke. 😢

13. Sanctuary of Covadonga in Asturias

The Sanctuary of Covadonga is a sacred place of pilgrimage in Asturias, Spain. The Santa Cueva is where the Virgin of Covadonga can be found.

The sanctuary is also home to the beautiful Basilica of Covadonga which was completed in 1901.

  • Casona de el Castañiu Rural Hotel – This is the rural hotel where my family stayed during our entire vacation in Asturias in 2021 with our two boys. This is a 1hr and 30 minutes drive (more or less) to the sanctuary of Covadonga, but if you’re visiting Asturias with your own car/rented car, I highly recommend this accommodation. 14. Royal Monastery of Saint Mary of Guadalupe in Caceres

The Royal Monastery of Saint Mary of Guadalupe is a Roman Catholic monastery located in Caceres, Spain, and has been considered one of the most important monasteries in Spain for more than four centuries.

The monastery is a stunning example of religious architecture and also has a museum and library, which houses a vast collection of books and artifacts related to the history of the monastery.

It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

16. Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba in Cordoba

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, also known as the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, is the cathedral of the Diocese of Cordoba in Andalusia.

It’s also known as the Great Mosque of Cordoba or Mezquita because it was originally built as an Islamic mosque in 785 when Cordoba was considered a Muslim capital. It was then converted into a cathedral in 1236 when Cordoba was captured by the Christian forces during the Reconquista.

18. Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza

The Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of Pillar in Zaragoza, Spain is said to be the very first church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to ancient tradition, The Apostle James was preaching to what is now Spain and was discouraged because of the failure of his mission. But the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him as he was praying and instructed him to build a church in her honor. The apparition is also considered the first Marian apparition in history.

The Cathedral-Basilica is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture, built in the 16th century. It is one of the most important Marian shrines in Spain and is a popular destination for pilgrims from all over the world.

The main attraction of the cathedral is an image of the Virgin Mary which is believed to have miraculous powers and is said to be the source of countless miracles. Every year, the feast of Our Lady of the Pillar is celebrated in the cathedral with much pomp and religious fervor.

I’m blessed to have visited the Basilica-Cathedral several times already. Once when I was still single, and twice or thrice after I got married. We always make a stopover everytime my husband has to go to Asturias for work. We want to bring my mom here in the future (when she’ll finally be granted a visa to visit us) because Our Lady of the Pillar is the patroness of our hometown Pilar, Bohol in the Philippines.

  2. I am impressed with your knowledge so I am wondering if you can help us with the list of catholic sites we can visit in Northern Spa. in starting with Barcelona and is having a transport service for a group of 15 is easy to find and where should we fly from going back home to the US.
    Planning to do this by this September 2025. WE will have a priest with us who can celebrate Mass on a daily basis and let us know also if we need to give money to any site church to celebrate Mass. Any help in terms of places to visit and transport costs. Thank you for any help you can give us.
